Never experienced a Buddhist chanting session?

Do you have unanswered questions on Buddhism?

Are you a regular at *w*s*d*p? Come meet old friends and make new ones J

These unique monthly sessions are designed for YOU - today’s busy executives so that you can get all your questions and doubts cleared. Chanting is a melodious way of reading as one reflects upon the Buddha’s Teachings. Like meditation, chanting helps one to concentrate and develop a peaceful state of mind. Indeed, practicing Buddhism is much more colourful than just reading up on Buddha’s Teachings. Seize this good affinity with Venerable Chuan Xian as he answers all the questions you have pertaining to Buddhism.

How Does the Buddhist Concept of Dana (Giving) Apply to Volunteer Work?

By Zenon Teh, Executive Director of Shan You Counselling Centre

‘Dana’ is an old Indian word translated as ‘generosity’ or ‘charity’. Dana includes the gift of wealth, the gift of Dharma and the gift of fearlessness. We can practice Dana by making donations and performing a generous deed such as volunteer work. It is the first perfection in the 6 perfections of the Bodhisattva Path (path of enlightenment through selflessly benefitting others). Why is it so?  How can the concept of Dana help us gain more insights and contributions in doing volunteer work at charities?

Put your new found insights to practice at the talk – by signing up for Shan You’s upcoming Street Collections in Aug and Sep.

About the Speakers / Facilitators

Venerable Chuan Xian - Born in Singapore, Venerable Chuan Xian worked in Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery’s Dharma Propagation Division for 4 years as a full time staff before his ordination. In these 4 years, he encountered and studied the Teachings of the Mahayana Tradition. Thereafter, he was deeply inspired by the Masters from the Vajrayana Tradition and renounced in the year 2002 at Phor Kark See Monastery under Ven. Kwang Sheng. In the year 2004, he became a fully ordained monk (Bikkhu). He traveled to India and Nepal to study Vajrayana Buddhism under great teachers from the Nyingma and Kagyu Lineages. Currently he is assisting in the work of KMSPKS’s Dharma Propagation Division.

Zenon Teh was brought up in Catholic schools and engaged in Christianity since his youth days. After he came into contact with Buddhism in early 1980s, Zenon took refuge from Sakyapa Tibetan gurus. In the mid '90s, he learnt about the Pureland Teachings and embraced Amitabha Buddha recitation, seeing the aspiration to be born in the Pureland as his highest goal in life. He is currently the Executive Director of Shan You Counselling Centre, which provides counselling and family support services that reflect the Buddhist principles of compassion, morality, concentration and wisdom.
