A LAYMAN’S RECIPE FOR SUCCESS - TEACHINGS BY THE BUDDHA

Talk cum Q&A session by Sylvia Bay

EARTH DAY SPECIAL: ENVIRONMENTAL MINDFULNESS

Talk cum Q&A session by Joe Lim, Project Manager, Singapore Environment Council

The Environment is by far one of the issues most of us take for granted. It's somewhat invisible, intangible and the vastness of it somehow puts people off as to where to start or how their little efforts can do any good. What most of us forget that by being Green/environmentally aware ourselves is only the beginning; we often overlook the need to influence and affect people around us to be aware and lead environmentally mindful lifestyles. We are not asking everyone to become a vegetarian, go around hugging trees or protest against hunting endangered species; we just need to look again at our daily consumption patterns and adjust our lifestyles.

BUDDHIST BACKPACKER’s SERIES: The long and winding road

Sharing by Jing Chiang and Alex Zech

Jing and Alex set off to explore the "world" in a 12 months trip turned out to be 16 months long. This change of the original time frame was one of the many challenges both were facing by traveling through Asia and Europe. To be able to step back from your desire and destination, to be finally able to accept that a journey has its own life was a path for both to learn.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS / FACILITATORS

Sylvia Bay has nine years of formal education in Buddhism and holds a BA (Hons) in Buddhist Studies from Buddhist & Pali University of Sri Lanka. She has been teaching Dhamma for 6yrs at Mangala Vihara and gives regular Dhamma talks at the invitation of various Buddhist organisations in Singapore, such as Tisarana, Buddhist Fellowship and Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery. Sylvia also holds a Masters Degree in International Public Policy.

Sean Liew (a.k.a. Bear) is a Psychotherapist-Coach/Trainer in private practice with over 9 years of experience in the field of psychotherapy and coaching. His strong passion is in working with adolescents, couples, parents, families and mandated clients. His area of work includes individual, pre-marital and marital therapy, relationship coaching, family therapy, parenting children and adolescents. In addition, Sean is also a Certified Human Behaviour Consultant trained to administer DISC, a behaviour profile analysis. He is happily married with two children.

Joe Lim has been a project manager/volunteer coordinator with the Singapore Environment Council since 1992 and has been involved in propagating the teachings of Sakamuni Buddha for around 2 years whenever he can. Besides environmental work; he also volunteers with the Singapore Buddhist Federation as a prison counsellor and as a Family Befriender at CDAC.

Jing Chiang is an artist and educator who just came back after 16 months trip to the "world". The idea of traveling around the "world" has been her wish for a substantial length of time. Her previous job gave her 13 weeks holiday every year, but still, she was so burned out during work days and spent most of the holiday recovering her wounded soul. So, quitting her job, cutting her ties to free herself became a natural process…

Alexandra Zech is a German who works as an architect in Singapore. Two years ago she was convinced by Jing to quit her job and join her on the world trip and live out of a suitcase. Even the fact of just having settled down in Singapore in 2004 she still felt strongly that this is a chance of once in her lifetime.
