Stress is a natural yet detrimental response to things that do not happen the way we want it to. Its immediate implications are mental and emotional strains, which affect the well-being of both mind and body. In this sharing, Nirūpamā will discuss the various cognitive strategies and relaxation techniques which we can use in our daily life to handle stress.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS / FACILITATORS 

 

Professor Cheng Chen Huang, a renowned practitioner, is actively involved in Dharma propagation activities in Taiwan, different states of America and South East Asia. He had published more than 500 news articles and 20 books. Some of these included the translated Chinese versions such as Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, by H.H. the Dalai Lama at Harvard; Consciousness at Crossroads; Anapanasati; Zen in the Martial Arts; Beginning to See and Mind Like Fire Unbound.

 

Shen Shi’an was one of the founding members of the Dharma Propagation Division of Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery in 1997, with experience in Dharma event management, initiating youth activities, purchasing for its Awareness Place bookshop project and management of its library. Currently, he heads the monastery's Web Department. He is the founder-editor of TheDailyEnlightenment.com, a Buddhist e-newsletter with 24,000 international members, the editor of "Be a Lamp Upon Yourself" and "The Daily Enlightenment (Book I & 2)" and an editor-writer for the monastery’s “Awaken” magazine. He frequently conducts Buddhist discussions for youth, and teaches in Singapore Buddhist Federation’s (SBF) English Dharma Class. He also writes for SBF’s magazine “Nanyang Buddhist” and BuddhistChannel.tv (an international Buddhist news network). He has represented Buddhist points of view during IRO, NACLI, NHB, NHG, SPF, SPM, SAF and ACM events. He also runs Moonpointer.com, which is a personal Buddhist blog project that hopes to promote the community sharing of Buddhism via writing. He is also a movie critic, keen to share aspects of the Buddha's teachings through the silver screen.

 

Sim Siew Ching (Nirûpamâ), graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2001 with a Master of Arts (Philosophy) and is currently taking a part-time study in Bachelor of Science (Psychology). She works in a social service sector. Despite her busy schedule, she volunteered as the President of the NUS Buddhist Society Alumni from 2002-2006. Nirûpamâ has attended numerous meditation retreats from honourable teachers such as Sayadaw Revata (disciple of Pa-Auk Sayadaw), Ajahn Brahmavamso, Venerable Ji Cheng, Venerable Kai En, Venerable Yuan Fan, Sayalay Dipankara and S. N. Goenka.

 

Sylvia Bay has nine years of formal education in Buddhism and holds a BA (Hons) in Buddhist Studies from Buddhist & Pali University of Sri Lanka. She has been teaching Dhamma for 6yrs at Mangala Vihara and gives regular Dhamma talks at the invitation of various Buddhist organisations in Singapore, such as Tisarana, Buddhist Fellowship and Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery. Sylvia also holds a Masters Degree in International Public Policy.
