buddhist backpacker’s series: The HAPPINESS that is Bhutan

The isolated and peaceful kingdom of Bhutan, where Vajrayana Buddhism is the state religion, had been shrouded in mystery for many years.  Sandwiched between two of the hungriest and fastest growing nations, India & China, Bhutan faces threat of globalisation and modernisation.  Intrigued by the fact that life seems to be still simple, despite external influences, and that Gross National Happiness is still valued over Gross Domestic Product, Elaine painstakingly saved up for a trip to the Land of the Thunder Dragon.

Applying Buddhism@work: avoid evil, do good, get ahead!

Chee Hoe will be discussing on common dilemmas faced when applying Budddhism at work - applying the 5 precepts (moral guiding principles); the importance of reputation and deciding between being active and passive. Chee Hoe will draw on his personal experiences and his expertise as a Trainer to offer insights and practical tips. Ching Wi will reflect on her career development and offering lessons learnt in areas of ethics, faith and courage. Come and decide if theirs are the winning ways to get ahead.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS / FACILITATORS 

 

Sylvia Bay has nine years of formal education in Buddhism and holds a BA (Hons) in Buddhist Studies from Buddhist & Pali University of Sri Lanka. She has been teaching Dhamma for 6yrs at Mangala Vihara and gives regular Dhamma talks at the invitation of various Buddhist organisations in Singapore, such as Tisarana, Buddhist Fellowship and Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery. Sylvia also holds a Masters Degree in International Public Policy.

 

Edward Wong, Bank Executive with a local bank, has been practicing Mahayana Buddhism since 2004. Having a Metta heart in nature, he has been actively involving in various voluntary works which enables him to put Buddhist teachings into practice; thus bringing joy and compassion to the needy. 

 

Elaine Sng is a PR practitioner by profession, who frequently travels to off-the-beaten-track places for pleasure, pilgrimage, or simply just to regain her sanity.  She has been volunteering with the Youth Ministry at KMSPKS since 2006, including helping out as a tour guide for the Vesak Trail for the past 2 years.  She has also just begun her stint as a volunteer Sunday School Teacher at the PKS Saturday & Sunday School.

 

Ruby Pan is an English language and literature teacher who is trained in drama. She used to write, perform and direct until teaching took over her life. She has worked with The Necessary Stage and appeared on the Mr. Brown Show. She also volunteers her services regularly for the KMSPKS Youth Ministry.

 

Siew Chee Hoe is a regional product manager with an electronics firm. He is also a trainer, versed in NLP. His first encounter with Buddhism was in Secondary 3 in Malaysia. After taking refuge in 1990, Chee Hoe has been volunteering at organisations such as the Buddha’s Light International Association and KMSPKS.

 

Yow Jit Sin is currently working as a laboratory Technician with a local research company. With a strong passion in helping people, he joined KMSPKS and some other organizations as a volunteer.  Jit Sin also spends his time meaningfully by attending regular Dharma classes despite his busy work schedule.

 

Yap Ching Wi is the Manager of the Youth Ministry in KMSPKS. She is trained in social work from NUS & LSE. An active volunteer, she has contributed in organisations such as the Re-making Singapore Committee & the Singapore Association of Social Workers. When she encountered Buddhism 7 years ago, she realized that her childhood dream of wanting to save the world is not childish after all!
