Stupas with Relics

Stupas are among the oldest symbols in Buddhist art, representing enlightenment and liberation. They are commonly found in Buddhist monasteries and often contain the relics or sacred objects associated with enlightened beings.

Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery has two stupas containing relics.

Venerable Zhuan Dao Stupa

The first stupa, commemorating the monastery’s founder, is situated between the Hall of Amrita Precepts and the Hall of Great Strength.

Venerable Hong Choon Stupa

The second stupa, dedicated to the second abbot, is located between Abbot’s Hall and the Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas. Both stupas are identical in appearance.

Circumambulation

As an expression of respect and reverence, devotees circumambulate a stupa in a clockwise direction (keeping their right towards the object of veneration), typically once or thrice. During circumambulation, individuals may silently recite the Buddha’s name or chant aloud in a group.
